ckpPRINCE GEORGE — British Columbia’s police watchdog says a Prince George RCMP officer will not face charges for shooting a man after being attacked with bear spray.

The report from the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) states that a shoplifting suspect fled from police on July 11, 2022, and several weapons and bear spray were found on him after his arrest. While in custody, the suspect grabbed the bear spray and attacked the officer and others with it, and the officer shot the man in the groin.

The watchdog says there are no grounds to believe the officer committed an offence.
