VICTORIA — Mayor of Houston, B.C. Shane Brienen will be taking a run at provincial politics.

On Tuesday morning, BC United Leader Kevin Falcon introduced Houston Mayor Shane Brienen as the BC United candidate for Nechako Lakes.

Falcon said “Shane’s unwavering commitment to his community, his family, and his relentless determination to deliver better outcomes for his region make him the ideal voice for the people of Nechako Lakes.”

“As a lifelong resident deeply rooted in Houston and its surrounding communities, I see a clear path towards a brighter future for our region. I firmly believe there are significant opportunities for progress in Nechako Lakes that the current government is not fully capitalizing on. I am determined to work every day to lower the cost of living for local families, strengthen mental health and addiction services, and address the growing healthcare crisis,” said Brienen. “As a father of four, I want to ensure our community thrives for this generation and the next, which means providing better support for our forestry and agriculture sectors and fostering a diversified local economy.”

Brienen is in his third consecutive term as Mayor of Houston and has spent 17 years in local governance.

Falcon also announced that BC United has now opened nominations in Abbotsford South, where candidates have already indicated their intention to seek the nomination. Nominations for various ridings, including Ladysmith-Oceanside, remain open.
