ICBC warns of incoming darker days, dangerous conditions for drivers

PRINCE GEORGE- The sun has been setting earlier and earlier each night, which is as sure a sign as any that winter is on its way. With potential fog rolling in, as well as snow and other hazards, the ICBC asks all drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful.

Saying that around half of the collisions involving pedestrians occur in the dark weather months of October to January, Road Safety Coordinator Karon Trenaman says drivers should be extra careful as the weather gets worse.

“Some of the things that drivers can do to mitigate that is to be very careful when they’re approaching intersections to be scanning to see what kind of activity is going on at that intersection,” she said.

While drivers can make a huge difference by staying focused and slowing down, there are also several things pedestrians can do to lower the risk of a collision. One of them is wearing brighter clothing, and to help with this the ICBC is handing out free feather shaped pedestrian safety reflectors. These reflectors can be attached to zippers to make yourself more noticeable, which can be incredibly important if you’re wearing dark colours.

“They will blend in to the dark environment if they’re wearing navy or black outerwear, and a lot of people favour black because it’s a practical, fashionable colour choice. But it’s not the best choice if youre out there walking around when its getting dark by 4:00, 4:30 p.m.”

Trenaman added many people will be doing their daily commutes in the dark for both the morning and night, which further amplifies the issue.

ICBC remains committed to making BC roads as safe as possible, and over the last 9 years they have invested more than 10 million dollars into various roadside projects, such as safer intersections, to lower collisions as much as possible.
