PRINCE GEORGE — Along with the announcement on Wednesday evening, the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction is providing $5 million in funding to Food Banks BC and the Public Health Association (PHABC).

Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, said in a statement that “rural and remote communities in Northern B.C. face extra barriers getting affordable and good-quality fresh food.”

Food Banks BC and PHABC will support local food-access projects developed by organizations from Northern B.C. that understand the unique challenges faced by rural, remote and First Nations communities. The grants will be available in 2024.

One organization that will be supported will be the Northern Undergraduate Student Society or NUGSS.

“I think it’s very important for food banks like us because we’re also targeting a different sort of population. So I feel like this funding will be very great for students.” – Lukas Dauksas, President, NUGSS

The president of NUGSS, Lukas Dauksas, says that new funding will help their own food bank on the campus of UNBC.

“We do put in some funds. We do a lot of fundraisers. We have pub nights, movie nights where students come around. They either donate us money or they donate us food. It all comes over to the food bank. We get various charitable organizations giving us bread and this and that, and we’re very, very grateful for that. This money that we’ll receive will be huge for us.” – Lukas Dauksas, President, NUGSS

Grants will be available to local food-access projects developed by organizations from Northern BC, like NUGSS, in 2024.
