Timberwolves basketball teams face Cascades in season opener

PRINCE GEORGE – The UNBC Timberwolves men and women’s basketball teams faced the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades last night (Nov. 3) for the Canada West season opener in Prince George.

The men’s team was able to secure the win with a score of 77-69, with Darren Hunter and Josh Gillespie giving the Timberwolves a late lead with back-to-back triples.

Down 46-34 by halftime, Evgeny Baukin was vital for the comeback, playing only 25 minutes but scoring 18 points, seven rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocks.

On the other hand, the women’s team suffered a shorthanded 96-54 loss against the Cascades, led by Canada West All-Star, Maddy Gobeil.

At halftime, UFV held a 53-25 lead over UNBC, with second-year Amrit Manak leading the Timberwolves with six points.

Deanna Tuchscherer would lead all scorers with 18 points and five rebounds for the Cascades, while Viktoriia Filatova would pace the Timberwolves with 14 points.

Next, the Timberwolves men and women’s teams will battle the UFV Cascades today (Nov. 4) for a second time at 7 p.m. in the UNBC Northern Sport Centre.
