“The greatest gift you can give:” 1 million dollar donation set to help generations of families

PRINCE GEORGE – Carol Bajkov was one of the Festival of Tree’s most dedicated volunteers, and to remember and honour her legacy her family donated one million dollars towards the Festival and the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.

“Her name will live for generations, what a legacy to have. It just fits the Carol that we all know and love. It fits her beautifully,” said Aimee Cassie, the Foundation’s CEO.

Calling Bajkov the quiet heart of the Festival, Cassie explained her impact was felt everywhere. Whether it’s all the volunteers she helped recruit, running the children’s workshop, or her unending commitment towards helping the community, Cassie says she can’t think of a better way to honour her memory.

“When I think of Carol, I think of family. I think of how important her family was to her and that connection that she had with her family and her grandkids. This donation is going to help support families, and I think that really speaks to Carol’s memory about helping family, about helping our littlest patients, and about ensuring future generations have the very best start at life,” Cassie said.

This year, all the fundraising money is being used to improve and expand the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). With a fundraising goal of 1.4 million dollars, Cassie says the one million dollar contribution easily helped the Festival surpass its goal, although the official number is not known yet.

“I don’t know that we can ever fully put into words the gratitude that we feel for Carol and for the legacy that she’ll continue to have. You think down to an infant that’s being able to be treated locally in Prince George versus being sent down to the lower mainland for treatment. How do you explain that impact? It is the greatest gift that you can give a family at a time when they need it most,” Cassie said.

The money will specifically be used to expand the NICU’s services through the creation of dedicated twin spaces, enhanced newborn care, additional beds, family spaces, and more.

“This gift is going to have a lasting impact on future generations. And I think for us, the best part is knowing that Carol’s name is going to be in the halls of the NICU department. It’s going to be out on the patio, it’s going to be in the family space, and people are going to know who Carol was and they’re going to know the impact that she had.”
