Drop the Gloves & Sock it to 'em

‘An act of kindness can change a life forever,’ says Bernie Goold of St Vincent De Paul on Spruce Kings’ charity night

PRINCE GEORGE – The Spruce Kings are dropping their gloves and not because of a fight. Friday night is potentially the Prince George team’s biggest night of the year as they partner with St Vincent De Paul to gather warm winter attire for our community members on the street.

“It’s incredible. Last year we got 12 bags full of stocks that lasted us right through to this Spring time. And when you’re on the street and you have inadequate shoes or boots, you’re often asking for a pair of socks two or three times a week.”

– Bernie Goold, Member of the Board, St Vincent De Paul

Most teams do the beloved teddy bear toss, but the Spruce Kings made the switch to winter clothes, which brings us ‘Drop the Gloves & Sock It To ‘Em’ night.

“People can bring tuques, warm clothing, socks, mitts, and gloves and all those sorts of things to throw on the ice. I think there’s far more value in something like that than teddy bears coming on the ice. There’s value in that also, but there’s such a high demand for this sort of stuff.”

– Mike Hawes, General Manager Prince George Spruce Kings

Yes the fans are excited, but the staff at St.Vincent might just be the most excited of the bunch.

“By the beggining of December, our staff at the store says ‘When are the Spruce Kings dropping their sock’ because they know that they will be able to say yes to everyone who comes for of pair.”

The Spruce Kings are expected to have their first sellout game tomorrow night. So, if you’re stopping by, make sure to bring those socks, those tuques and any winter warm attire to throw on the ice. The game starts at 7:00.
