2023 a challenging but successful year for Prince George RCMP
PRINCE GEORGE – As 2023 wraps up, Prince George RCMP Superintendent Shaun Wright looked back on what he called a challenging, but overall successful year for the Prince George RCMP. One of the biggest challenges Wright pointed to was the decriminalization of hard drugs.
“Decriminalization of hard drugs in British Columbia was a learning curve for us that occurred in January and through the year, so we had to implement some new strategies on how to deal with those things. We still receive a lot of calls with people calling us and saying, ‘hey, there’s people smoking drugs on the sidewalk at whatever location,’ and there’s really no criminal offense unless it’s within a few meters of the school or that sort of thing,” Wright explained.
“Unfortunately, the issues of disorder from open drug use haven’t gone away. But one of the tools for us to move people along or reduce that activity has been taken away from us,” he continued.
