Salmon Valley in turmoil over Farmer’s Institute

PRINCE GEORGE— Residents of Salmon Valley gathered on Thursday for an emergency meeting alleging the Salmon River Farmers Institute (SRFI) is not upholding it’s stated goal of serving the needs of the agricultural community.

Michelle Arnett says her and other community member have tried to join the institute but were unable.

“We’re not entirely sure what the reasoning behind the current president’s so lack or reluctance for individuals to join,” says Victor Mobley, regional district director for Fraser Fort George, electorial area A. “I’ve talked to the numerous times that he hasn’t given me a truly straight answer as to why or what the reasoning is to not have more members.”

At the heart of the issue is the Social and Educational Centre that is owned by SRFI. According to residents in the past the centre was provided funding from resident with an understanding that the building can be used by the community.

The president Amie Cheramy told CKPG the Social and Educational Centre is open and available for rent. However, Arnet says the building has fallen into disrepair and she’s unable to join the institute and participate in the upkeep of the building.

The meeting resulted in a vote to create a second institute with the hopes of a future merger to preserve the social and educational centre.

“the whole point is is actually getting back the one [Farmers Institute] that was originally made by their parents or grandparents,” Explains Michelle Arnett, a local farmer in Salmon Valley. ” It’s tradition. It’s history. It literally should be the community’s.”
