UNBC’s Green Day returning next week with significant expansion

PRINCE GEORGE – The University of Northern British Columbia’s (UNBC) annual Green Day event will be returning next week, but rather than just one day the event has been expanded to last for two weeks.

“(Green Day coordinator Olga Pickard) first suggested that it shouldn’t just be one day. It should just be lots of events that lead up to that, and we should always have sustainability and think about it every single day of our lives,” explained UNBC’s Sustainability Manager Ann Duong.

There will be many events from March 11-26, including but not limited to presentations, tours of various facilities, electric cars, and a human library, among many others. A human library is where you can “borrow” somebody to speak with them and learn from their experiences and knowledge.

“This human library is going to feature firefighters and people who have been evacuated from wildfires. So that’s sort of the theme for this human library, and it’s organized by a bunch of youth as well, which is really great,” Duong said.

“We have activities for kids and we have a 3D art making workshop with recyclables that we’re going to pick up for the campus cleanup,” she continued, when speaking on other events.

A big focus of Green Day is of course waste management, which Pickard wanted to emphasize this year. There will be various presentations about waste management, including presentations on the process of recycling.

“I would like to have discussions and maybe come up with ideas and see how the community, the University, and all of us can figure out ways to improve the City of Prince George. I also would like for Prince George to have a compost program here. We don’t really have a compost program here and that falls into the waste management topic,” Pickard said.

By expanding Green Day to be more than just a one day event and a two week thing, the hope is to get us all thinking about sustainability and ways to be eco-friendly. Whether this is by learning from the various events and presentations planned, or just finding day to day activities to be a little more green, UNBC hopes you visit its campus between March 11-26 to take part.
