PRINCE GEORGE — It was on Thursday, March 7 when the Prince George RCMP revealed that over the last three months, that a number of investigations have lead to substantial seizures of prescription and illicit drugs. Since then, a political firestorm has erupted around safe supply in this province.

Federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre was one of the first to react, releasing a short post on social media site X.

Then Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also took to X citing the seizure here in Prince George, as a serious concern of diversion and requested an emergency meeting with the B.C. government to quote “stop the flow of these high-potency opioids to Alberta.”

And by Monday, the discussion surrounding the seizures of the drugs had made its way into Question Period in Victoria.

B.C. Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth refuted claims by the Alberta Premier and opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, saying that the RCMP told him that there was no evidence to support their claims of widespread diversion.

“In discussions with the RCMP, as they said [Monday] morning that they have no evidence to suggest that there is widespread diversion of safe supply drugs in the province of British Columbia.” – Mike Farnworth, Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General

Farnworth also had a message for Premier Danielle Smith saying that he “thinks it behooves the Premier of Alberta to do a little more research rather than respond to a single press release.”

B.C. Mounties say there’s no evidence of widespread diversion of so-called safer supply drugs to the illicit market in the province or elsewhere in Canada. They also say that seizures that have been confirmed to contain drugs from safe supply are rare, despite recent cases where large quantities were taken by police.
