Hometown Cougars can clinch Western Conference title with victory over last-place Blazers

KAMLOOPS — The Prince George Cougars can claim the Western Conference title with a victory over the Kamloops Blazers in WHL action on Saturday (March 23) at CN Centre.

Game time is 6 p.m.

The Cats thumped the Blazers 9-2 on Friday (March 22) in Kamloops, with 13 Cougars reaching the scoresheet in what was the penultimate game of the regular season for both clubs.

Ondrej Becher registered a hat-trick in support of Prince George goaltender Ty Young, who stopped 34 shots to pick up the victory between the pipes.

Jordan Keller and Emmitt Finnie tallied for the Blazers, whose goaltenders, Jesse Sanche and Logan Edmonstone, split time between the crease.

The Cougars (48-15-1-3) have a three-point lead on the Portland Winterhawks (46-15-4-1), who have one game in hand on Prince George.

Tri-City (23-40-2-1) edged visiting Portland 4-3 in overtime on Friday to give the Cougars control of their own Western Conference destiny.

Kamloops (20-41-3-3) will finish last in league standings.
