‘A knee jerk reaction’: Bond says on provincial task force to address weapon and drug use in hospitals

PRINCE GEORGE — In a bid to address drug use and weapons in B.C.’s hospitals, the provincial government will be setting up a new taskforce to streamline policies so that all health authorities in the province will have the same rules.

“There are some differences between the policies and different health authorities. That’s why I put in place a task force to ensure that we have one policy across B.C. with respect to issues of people using illicit drugs in hospitals.” – Adrian Dix, B.C. Minister of Health

The taskforce is in response to a memo from Northern Health that was leaked last week.

The Northern Health memo reads, in part: “With decriminalization of possession of drugs/substances (small amounts for personal use), staff should not be searching a patient’s personal belongings and taking away, or holding onto their substances. These can remain with the patient. In circumstances where it is required (e.g. psychiatric intensive care), staff are required to follow the safe keeping of patients and residents valuables policy.”

BC United Health Critic Shirley Bond says that the decision to create a task force is disappointing. Bond also called the decision to create a taskforce reactionary, but admitted that the discussion that will take place, will be important.

“My concern is that this was a knee jerk reaction to pressure that has been building. While that discussion that takes place at the task force will be important, what I care about is what’s going to happen tomorrow.” – Shirley Bond, BC United Health Critic

More details regarding the taskforce will be provided at a later date, including who will be on it and what their responsibilities are.
