PRINCE GEORGE — Despite the break in the weather, the BC Wildfire Service is urging you to remain cautious if travelling our camping this Victoria Day long weekend.

With that in mind, the BC Wildfire Service is offering up the following tips to remember to ensure we all stay safe:

  • Wildfire behaviour, like weather conditions, can be notoriously hard to predict and can change rapidly.
  • Before traveling check DriveBC for the most up to date information on road conditions.
  • Review the bans and restrictions page on the BC Wildfire website before heading outdoors.
  • Make sure you are connected with BC Wildfire service, to stay up to date on the current wildfire situation.

The BC Wildfire Service continues to respond to new and holdover fires throughout the region, for more information on the current wildfire situation refer to the BC Wildfire app or desktop map.

The Fort Nelson zone has received variable amount of precipitation throughout the zone. While cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity is welcome for firefighting efforts on the ground, conditions could change rapidly. Minimal amounts of precipitation, like what has been experienced in the zone, will have short term effects on forest fuels. Warmer temperatures can quickly counteract the effects of precipitation, meaning the threat of extreme fire behavior can return.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone, or directly through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.
