Highway salt lures Moose, increasing the risk of dangerous collisions in Northern BC
PRINCE GEORGE – In northern BC, moose are often spotted on the roadside, either looking to cross the road or quietly foraging. When travelling at highway speeds, these animals can harm motorists and themselves. A recent study by UNBC examines why moose are attracted to roadways.
Living in northern British Columbia, many have encountered moose on the roadside. Sometimes, moose are searching for minerals that are hard to find in nature.
The study indicates that salts are washed off the road and accumulate in ditches alongside the busy highway. Officials are considering ways to stop moose from licking these minerals.
