BC Community Bat Program Seeks Volunteers for Annual Bat Count Amid White-Nose Syndrome Concerns
PRINCE GEORGE – The B-C Community Bat Program seeks volunteers to assist biologists in monitoring bat populations across the province. The annual bat count program has officially commenced and requires volunteers to observe maternity roost sites at sunset to count the flying bats. Volunteers are requested to conduct counts twice during the early season when females are flying and twice later in the summer when their pups are learning to fly. They are then asked to provide the organization with the collected data. The program emphasizes the increasing importance of monitoring these colonies due to the rise of White-nose Syndrome, which is causing a decline in bat populations across North America.
