PRINCE GEORGE — Nearly $45 million dollars that has been unspent from the 2023 budget, has been carried forward to 2024.

The City’s Standing Committee for Finance and Audit met on May 24, and one item that was discussed was carry forwards. Carry forwards are capital projects that aren’t completed by the end of the calendar year and the City’s Director of Finance and IT Services, Kris Dalio explains that there are a number reasons why a capital project may be carried forward, including labour shortages or the fact that a certain project is not intended to be completed in one year.

Every year, unspent capital funds for projects that have not begun will be brought forward to the Standing Committee on Finance and Audit for information and reviewed and considered for carry forward approval.

One example of a project that has been carried forward is upgrades to the Aquatic Centre. Over $8.5 million was allocated in the 2023 budget, but $8.3 million was carried forward to 2024, as just over $200,000 was spent on the project in 2023.

Other carry forwards include the rigging replacement for the Prince George Playhouse. $251,989 was allocated in the 2023 budget, only $3,168 was spent in 2023, so $248,821 was carried forward into 2024.

Another project identified for carry forward in 2024, was the CN Centre audio system renewal. In the 2023 budget, $950,000 was allocated for the project, only $37,711 was spent in 2023, therefore $912,288 was carried forward for the 2024 calendar year.
