PRINCE GEORGE — The gym floor at Northern Sport Centre (NSC) is in need of replacement and the City of Prince George has agreed to provide a portion of their revenue from a sponsorship of the main court, to contribute to the project.

As was outlined in a report to council, with the gym floor in need of replacement, one way to assist with the funding of the project is through the selling of naming sponsorships. Director of Civic Facilities and Events Andy Beesley, said at Monday’s council meeting that UNBC “has done the legwork to obtain a sponsorship package for the naming of the gym floor for a total of $75,000.”

UNBC wrote a letter to council to propose an agreement that “would see UNBC and the City agree to use their shares of the proceeds to assist in funding the gym floor project.” The proposed sponsorship is $75,000 over six years and out of that “$25,000 will cover the additional sponsorship benefits provided to the sponsor by UNBC Athletics.” For the remaining $50,000, “the City would receive 20% ($10,000) and UNBC would receive 80% ($40,000), and the City would contribute its $10,000 to the NSC for the project. UNBC has also committed additional financial support in the amount of $30,000.

Director of Athletics and Recreation for UNBC, Loralyn Murdoch says that the sponsorship of the main court would give the Northern Sport Centre and UNBC a unique distinction, compared with other universities and sports facilities in Canada. “It’s something that we looked at, and it’s a good idea and we went out to the community and people also thought it was a good idea, so it’s going to be super exciting to see what it looks like”, Murdoch said.

Mayor Simon Yu of Prince George says that council made the correct decision that “we will use our share to give back to the building, to furnishing the floor, which is in need of maintenance.” Yu also said that “we as a city, need to contribute to the [NSC] so we can use it.” and that Northern Sport Centre benefits not only UNBC, but the entire city.

Both Loralyn Murdoch and Mayor Yu, highlighted that the new gym floor will ensure that the Northern Sport Centre remains one the best sport and athletic facilities in the North. “The amount of people that come through this facility annually are all going to get a fresh look. It’s going to highlight why it’s so important to have a facility like this in Northern BC and in the City of Prince George.”, Murdoch said.
