It’s time for small businesses to toot their horn

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s a staggering stat, in terms of how significant small business is to the bottom line in this province.

“We define a small business as any business that has fewer than 50 staff,” says Darren Dunne with Small Business BC. “And you may be surprised to hear that there are almost 500,000 businesses in B.C. that fulfill that criteria.”

And that’s the reason Small Business BC is now launching the nomination period for its upcoming awards. And the local Chamber of Commerce is also on the verge of launching its own excellence awards.

But sometimes, it’s challenging to convince businesses to take the leap.

“They’re in the thick of those day-to-day challenges,” says Neil Godbout with the PG Chamber of Commerce. “There’s also maybe a bit of that humility. Am I really that good enough? But then there’s also the yeah, but that doesn’t pay the bills except that it does rate whether it’s small business, ABC or the Chamber of Commerce, that recognition really does pay dividends.”

And that’s part of the reason Small Business BC doesn’t necessarily expect the business to nominate itself.

“Say you want to nominate your favourite business, so you just give us the name of the business, their email address, and we’ll follow up with them and let them know that, ‘Hey, I want you to know about these awards and they think that you should enter.’ And then once you’ve been nominated and we publish you on our website,” says Dunne.

The Small Business BC awards ceremonies are in November, while the Chamber’s nomination period closes September 2nd with the successful nominees to be announced in the third week of September.
