FORT ST. JAMES, B.C. — Northern Health says patients from Stuart Lake Hospital in Fort St. James are being moved due to wildfire activity in the area.

In a news release issued Sunday (July 21) evening, Northern Health says Stuart Lake Hospital remains open, but patients are being proactively transferred away as an evacuation alert issued by the Bulkley Nechako Regional District covers some of Highway 27 south of Fort St. James.

“Transferring patients with more complex needs in advance will help simplify any potential evacuation of the hospital, should that become necessary,” Northern Health states. “Some Stuart Lake Hospital inpatients are being transferred to St. John Hospital in Vanderhoof, and family members are being notified directly.”

As of Sunday evening, the Pitka Creek wildfire southwest of Fort St. James is measured at 147 hectares in size, according to the BC Wildfire Service’s online map. The out-of-control wildfire was discovered on Friday, July 19, and is suspected to be caused by lightning.
