Passenger numbers up 15% at YXS in 2023

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Airport (YXS) was busy in 2023, with added capacity on existing routes and the re-introduction of the seasonal non-stop flight to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico among other highlights, and in terms of passenger numbers, YXS is starting to a bounce back in traffic.

417,848 people travelled through YXS in 2023, up 15% from 2022, but those numbers aren’t quite back up to 2019 levels quite yet. President and CEO of the Prince George Airport Authority (PGAA), Gordon Duke says that it will take another couple of years to get back to those levels. However, Duke said that those numbers are encouraging, and that it will further lead to more growth at YXS.

However, the aviation industry as a whole is still facing challenges that directly and indirectly affects our airport. Those challenges include a global shortage of qualified aircrew, maintenance staff, and aircraft.

As well as hoping to attract new routes, YXS is also hoping to attract a growing airline, Porter Airlines, that is providing competition for Air Canada and WestJet in other parts of the country. In terms of potential new routes, the airport is looking at the potential of a direct flight to Las Vegas and down the road, some seasonal transcontinental service may be in the cards, as airlines start to expand their networks to pre-COVID levels.
