PRINCE GEORGE — B.C.’s Human Rights Commissioner recently released a report that looks at 10 key systems that are impacting human rights in the province. The report highlights significant inequalities and injustices affecting B.C. residents, and while the report does not call for any recommendations, the goal is to enhance awareness and understanding.

The ten key issues that the report highlighted are:

  1. The right to housing
  2. The right to an adequate standard of living
  3. The right to education
  4. The right to fair treatment in employment
  5. The right to health
  6. The right to fair treatment in public spaces
  7. The right to fair treatment in criminal justice
  8. The right to fair treatment in the family sphere
  9. The right to fair treatment by the child welfare system
  10. All human rights depend on a clean, healthy and sustainable environment

Dawn Hemingway was in Vancouver with the commissioner when the report was released and was pleased to hear that the voices of those facing challenges were heard and included.

“There is the voice of the community there, and it shows that there are people across the province, whether it’s organizations, individuals, people who are experiencing challenges. They are organizing themselves and trying to figure out how to speak up and make the changes that are necessary.” – Dawn Hemingway, Professor Emerita, School of Social Work, Gender/Women’s Studies and Health Sciences, UNBC

“Across B.C., there are inequalities in the systems we interact with every day or when we are in need of extra support—from schools to workplaces; from hospitals to courthouses,” said Commissioner Govender. “Such inequities impact all of us, but impact marginalized people and communities in particular. We must ensure that we place human rights considerations at the centre of key issues concerning housing, climate, child protection, criminal justice and public health because these systems are instrumental in either protecting or undermining our human dignity and rights entitlements.”

This is the Commissioner’s first Rights in Focus report. New reports will be added to the series every three years to reexamine the key issues, chart human rights progress and find opportunities for social and legal change in the human rights landscape.
