Local youth boxer draws comparison to National Champion

PRINCE GEORGE – 12-year-old boxer Audrey Edmunds has only been in the ring for around six months, but her coaches at Inner City Boxing say she’s quickly become one of Prince George’s most promising boxers.

“When we started back in the early 2000s, there was an athlete here called Marina Mavros. She was Inner City’s first national champion, and Audrey reminds me of Marina a lot. She follows in Marina’s footsteps and she’ll do great things as well,” said Kenny Lally, co-owner of Inner City Boxing and one of Edmunds’s coaches.

In only a couple short months Edmunds has impressed with her impressive technique, strength, and her unrelenting work ethic and toughness. While boxing clearly clicked for her right away, Edmunds said she initially didn’t expect to be this invested in the sport.

“It was a temporary thing between basketball season, but I ended up really loving it,” Edmunds said.

“I love all the challenges that come my way, and I love how fun and exciting it is,” she added.

Edmunds, alongside 11 other Inner City Boxers, will be competing at the B.C. Bronze Gloves Championships in Chilliwack this weekend. While Edmunds is quite young and doesn’t bring a lot of experience into her first career fight, she and Lally both are confident she has what it takes to impress in the ring.

“She’s the youngest on the team and she’s the only girl, and when we’re getting ready for competitions we need to do live action. So she is in there with these guys, toe-to-toe, staying in there. There’s rounds where she comes out bloody and she’s smiling, shes loving it, so it’s great,” Lally said.

“The first time I saw her spar, she got hurt in the first round and she just came back and finished all three rounds and just kept getting better and better, so we’re really looking forward to what Audrey is going to showcase,” Jag Seehra, co-owner of Inner City Boxing and Edmunds’s other coach.

“I’m really excited to prove to myself and my coaches what I’m capable of. I’m most excited about the experience, and to have my very first fight,” Edmunds said, when speaking on the upcoming fights.

Lally explained he and Seehra opened Inner City Boxing together back in February, so under their tutelage the organization is still quite young, so this upcoming tournament is a big moment not just for Edmunds, but the organization as a whole.

“This is huge for us because this is the first time for Jag and I to actually showcase us as coaches. We’re hoping we’re doing the right thing with our coaching. Our athletes, they’re cooking, they’re ready to go, they’re doing what we used to do. So we’re looking forward to it and we’re hoping to bring back some champions,” Lally said.

Edmunds will be joined by teammates Thunder innis, Joshua Greenwood, Jaxon Brewer, Michael Brooks, Ben Ruttan, Trayton Ruttan, Cartel Niedermayer, Declan Gilchrist, Adam Young, Koehen Mcleod, and Jacob Brent. The fights will take place from September 13-15 in Chilliwack.
