PRINCE GEORGE— The Spruce Kings finished up their final practice at Kopar Memorial Arena on Wednesday, before hitting the road for their regular season opener.

To kick off the new campaign, the Kings have the tall task of playing the reigning Fred Page Cup Champions, the Surrey Eagles.

“We did see them in pre-season, so we have a bit of an idea of what they’re like,” said Spruce Kings GM Mike Hawes on the match-up. “They’re always going to be a good and hard working team. It’s going to be a real test for us, but we’re looking forward to it. If you’re going to get the regular season started, you might as well play to the defending champs first.”

The teams opening weekend only gets tougher after their match against the Eagles as they play a back-to-back-to-back on the road. Despite the tough situation, Hawes is all for his teams challenge.

“Let’s put them to the test early on. That’s what’s going to happen here with three games in almost two and a half days, so it’s a real test. They’re tough places to play and our guys are going to be up for it, but, they’re going to have to work hard to get some results,” said Hawes on their difficult start to the season.

The Spruce Kings wrap up their opening weekend against the Chilliwack Chiefs and Langley Rivermen before heading back to Prince George for their home opener next Friday.
