SD57 to hold school board meeting in McBride

PRINCE GEORGE – School District 57’s monthly school board meeting will take place in McBride on October 8. Since covid, Superintendent Jameel Aziz says the District hasn’t been able to connect with rural communities in person as much as it would have liked to, and he says it’s an exciting opportunity to get back to in-person meetings.

“We certainly heard from our rural communities that they do not feel that they have the equivalent voice and representation that the city of Prince George and its citizens have, so the board made a very conscious decision that each fall we would go to the Valley to basically have a meeting there. So even though we’re in McBride tomorrow, some of our board and staff will be traveling to Valemount as well to tour schools and make some connections,” Aziz said.

Aziz added SD57 has also committed to be in Mackenzie every spring, so the hope is at least two board meetings a year will be held in other communities outside of Prince George.

“We hope that people will see it as outreach and the kind of advocacy that we’re trying to provide to our communities who are an important part of SD57,” he said.

Among other items on the agenda, one thing Aziz is looking forward to is student presentations, as he says he and the district are always happy to hear feedback from students.

“It’s always really important to us to have student voice and representation at our meetings. And by having some student presentations, we’re actually hoping that the parents of those students will also be in attendance, at least to watch their children present, and I think that’s always an important part to engage the community,” he said.
