Shurgot taking advantage of opportunity with Cougars

PRINCE GEORGE— After his first 38 regular season WHL games, between this season and last, Lee Shurgot was yet to score his first goal for the Cougars. He finally scored on November 9 against the Vancouver Giants and hasn’t looked back since.

“It just starts with the first one. I think that’s a huge thing for me. Once I got the first one, you feel more confident, throughout your game,” said Shurgot on the impact of his first WHL goal.

Since his first tally, the Saskatoon native has put up eight points over a six game point streak.

“I’ve seen a lot of growth in his (Shurgot’s) game. He’s a real smart player. He is an offensive player. He’s put up a lot of numbers in the past and he’s just slowly worked himself into the into the top six,” said Cougars General Manager and Head Coach Mark Lamb on the 17-year-old.

When Riley Heidt went out with a broken jaw a few weeks ago, Shurgot played in his spot in the top six spot and shined with a three point weekend. While he’s on the hottest streak of his young career, he’s trying to keep it simple and not overthink it.

“When you’re hot, you just got to stick with it and can’t change your game. Just play simple and keep on doing what you’re doing,” said Shurgot at practice on Tuesday.
