Prince George to host 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games

PRINCE GEORGE— On Tuesday morning, the coordinators of the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games announced that it will be held in Prince George. The event will take place in seven months, from July 10-12 with an expected 1200 athletes set to compete.

“The welcoming spirit that Prince George has (shown) since we have spoken with the city since they approached us to host the games. Everybody that we’ve met along the way has just been so gracious, generous and just quick to jump in and help with anything,” said Michelle Cruickshank, the VP of Sport and Programs for Special Olympics BC.

Special Olympics continues to grow year over year and is super important to the athletes competing.

“Special Olympics gave me a lot of things. Confidence in myself, a purpose to get up, somebody to learn from, somebody to teach. It gave me purpose,” said Prince George native and Special Olympics athlete Adam Spokes.

While so much goes into making an event like this run, the reward for coordinators and volunteers is no doubt worth it.

“I co-chaired the 2001 Special Olympic Summer Games here in Prince George and never, ever forgot the event and what it meant to me over the years. It is so gratifying,” said former mayor of Prince George and Chair of the summer event, Lyn Hall.

Though the event is still over half a year away, to make it a success the coordinators are looking for plenty more volunteers to help out in the lead up and during the Summer Games in July.
