PRINCE GEORGE — Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the Prince George area Sunday (Feb. 2).

It says people in the area, as well as those in Stuart – Nechako, can expect a period of very cold wind chills this morning.

“Very early morning temperatures are combining with gusty northerly winds to create wind chill values between -35 C and -40 C,” Environment Canada said. “By later this morning temperatures are expected to rise above warning criteria.”

According to Environment Canada, extreme cold warnings are issued in the Central Interior when the temperature or wind chill is expected to reach -40 C for at least two hours.

It’s asking people to cover up and to be on the lookout for cold related symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

“Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” the weather agency said. “Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables.”

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”

Environment Canada is calling for a day time high of -20 C Sunday, with temperatures expected to drop to -24 C tonight. Factoring in tonight’s wind chill, it’s expected to feel like -38 C.

Temperatures are expected to remain below seasonal for the entire week, with day time highs between -12 C and -17 C, while overnight lows are expected to be between -20 C and -26 C.
