PRINCE GEORGE — A report from Prince George city staff say the costs to clear snow in 2024 was at least $300,000 over budget.

In a report going before Monday’s (Feb. 24) City Council meeting, staff say snow clearing budget for 2024 was $10.3-million, though expenses to date have amounted to $10.6 million.

“Defined timelines for completion of snow removal activities and annual budgetary adjustments support the level of service outlined in the existing policy,” the report read. “Budgetary enhancements support equipment resources, contracted services, staffing and operating hours required to achieve defined levels of service.”

The report also showed that snow clearing efforts came in over budget in four of the last six years.

“Varying winter conditions impact the cost associated with snow removal and ice control and directly affect seasonal operating expenditures,” the report read. “The internal staffing model and associated labour costs required to perform snow and ice control operational activities are a semifixed, necessary expenditure to ensure that resources are available to support normal winter maintenance and snow event declarations.”

“Other constant costs are related to equipment and materials necessary for winter operations and end of season maintenance.”

Staff note that at the Jan. 22 budget meeting, council directed them to bring the existing Snow and Ice Control Policy for discussion.

Monday’s meeting of Prince George City Council gets underway at 6:00 p.m., Feb. 24.
