PRINCE GEORGE – With a great deal of debate, Council has approved sending the proposed Official Community Plan to the next stage which is a public hearing. The debate surrounded a motion put forward by Councillor Trudy Klassen to defer the decision on moving to a public hearing until a number of organizations could give their input.

“We need to spend more time to get this right,” she noted.

Organizations included in her motion include the Airport Authority, large land holders, the Chamber of Commerce, UNBC, CNC, Northern Health, School District 57, the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, BC Transit, seniors groups and industry.

But the motion went under fire from a number of Councillors who noted a public hearing opens that avenue for discourse.

“Is this document perfect? No,” noted Councillor Ron Polillo. “We don’t have the resources. We don’t have the budget.”

The work began in June of 2023 but Mayor Simon Yu felt there as no pressure to rush accepting the proposed plan, suggesting instead that there be a pair of roundtables.

“This document belongs to the people, not the second floor,” referring to the Planning Department location at City Hall.

In the end, Council approved moving forward with the next stage and a a special meeting will take place in mid-March for the hearing.
