PRINCE GEORGE – “You choose kindness.”

That’s a quote from one of three students with the Changes group at Prince George Senior Secondary School.

“Changes is a social justice group that focuses on bringing positive change, both locally and globally through running fundraisers like donating and volunteering,” explains student Lily Maier

And that is the very definition of what Pink Shirt Day is all about: social justice and anti-bullying. And it’s a big deal at PGSS.

“It’s a positive school culture. It represents our students or staff working together towards creating a safe, inclusive school for all students, not just today, but every day throughout the school year,” says Principal Randy Halpape.

Even a pair of Cariboo Cougars donned the pink for this day.

“Being respectful, being kind, you know, standing up against bullying as is, is not just within sports,” related Grady Gustafson, Cariboo Cougars.

“It’s everyday life. So just to represent, we put this [shirt] on for a day and we just want to lead and show by example be kind truth, honesty, together,” says Rylan Bissett, also with the Cariboo Cougars.

“Each one of us does part every day in our school, and I think it’s represented in just as having so many programs and students involved in specialized programs within our building, whether it be the Montessori program, the project-based learning program, or hockey class or hockey program and more,” says Halpape.

And with that comes the message: kindness and caring shouldn’t be restricted to the last Wednesday in February.
