Hixon-area evacuation orders, alerts lifted

HIXON, B.C. — The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has rescinded its evacuation orders and alerts in the vicinity of Hixon.

This comes as the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reported “good progress” on the 70-hectare blaze which sparked Friday (May 2) near Naver Creek in the Hixon area.

“As the emergency is still ongoing, an Evacuation Order or Evacuation Alert may need to be reissued,” the Regional District said in an update at 5:00 p.m. Saturday (May 3).

In an update at 9:19 p.m. Saturday, the BC Wildfire said the fire was mostly burning rank 1 – a low-intensity smouldering ground fire. There was some rank 2 fire behaviour in areas with larger slash piles.

“Crews made good progress today and will resume suppression efforts Sunday morning (May 4),” the BC Wildfire Service said.

“Slash piles within the fire perimeter are expected to continue burning down over the next week. These are being monitored closely to prevent deeper ignition into root systems.”

The BC Wildfire Service will have 40 personnel on site throughout the day Sunday. The will be working on breaking up slash piles and mopping up, while also limiting heat pockets that could reignite.

It also noted the Hixon Fire Department will remain on site overnight to monitor for flare-ups and to ensure that structures remain secure.

“We are managing this wildfire in unified command with the Hixon Fire Department,” the BCWS statement added. “This means we are working together to establish common objectives, strategies, tactics, and information sharing.”

“At this time, the fire is not threatening Highway 97. However, shifting winds could cause conditions to change quickly.”

The fires is believed to be human caused, though an exact cause has not been determined.
