PRINCE GEORGE – For the first time in Special Olympics BC’s history, the ribbon used to hold the medals was designed by an athlete. Prince George Special Olympics athlete Chase Caron had the distinction of being the first ever athlete and ribbon designer, unveiling her design at the Prince George Civic Centre.

“I hope that the ribbon will make people feel the sense of accomplishment and pride in the award being won, and all the trials and tribulations the athletes have persevered through, both in practice and in competition,” Caron said.

“I hope it shows the skills and abilities of Special Olympics athletes. And I hope it shows pride: pride in your team, pride in your province, pride in your own endurance, and pride in yourself and how you developed your own skill set,” she continued.

The ribbon designed by Caron.

Caron explained the colours used were meant to evoke both B.C.’s flag colours, and also the colours of nature and summer. The infinity symbol adds to this, representing the infinity of nature, but also the continual pride and joy felt from athletes training hard and celebrating sport.

“It’s the infinity of the colours of the Olympic flame, as well as the sky and the water. It’s all never ending, such as our perseverance and what we strive for,” Caron said.

The words chosen further reflect this, with the main slogan of “Let your Brilliance Shine” hoping to evoke each athlete’s individual journeys in developing their skills in whatever way works best for them. Regarding the upcoming games, Caron is excited not just to compete, but to celebrate the sport and the athletes themselves.

“To feel that sense of accomplishment, both in not only winning, but for this to symbolize those
accomplishments,” Caron said.

The provincial games will go from July 10 to 12, and it’s still seeking many volunteers, so it encourages you to be a part of what’s expected to be an excitement filled sporting showcase.
