Seed Garden back at PGPL

PRINCE GEORGE – It is the time of year when gardeners, novice or not, plant their gardens. And the Master Gardeners with the help of the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society want to lend a hand. And they do so with a small stand on the top floor of the Bob Harkins branch of the library. It’s a seed library. All you need to do is pick a pack or two: marigolds, vegetables, whatever.

“This is the whole premise. Borrow, grow, return,” says Larissa Clotildes, Manager, Communications & Engagement for the Prince George Public Library. “So you borrow the now in the springtime, take them home, grow the plants, enjoy them all summer long. Maybe you’ll get some vegetables, maybe you’ll get some fruits, maybe you’ll get some beautiful flowers for your own garden or for your own home. And then in the fall, you let some of those plants go to seed, collect the seeds and bring them back to the library.”

The seed library was started about three years ago with people digging up plots of land, when the public became much savvier about food security in light of successive disasters and COVID.

“There are seed libraries in other communities. They’re not always operated out of the traditional book library necessarily. But we’re certainly not the first place to have done something like this.”

And this year’s seed library has reached a milestone.

“Every year, there are a few new things. This is exciting. Actually, I believe in speaking with the Master Gardeners. This is one of the first years where the percentage of seeds that have been locally donated exceeds the number that have been purchased new for the seed library.”

So if you want to put your green thumb to the test, the library might be your first stop.
