RCMP announce return of Torch Run
PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George RCMP announced the return of its annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, but this year it has extra significance as it will happen just one day before the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games.
“It’s an opportunity for us to come together with our Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement officers. This year just happens to be bigger because it’s considered the final leg, which is a lead up to the summer games, so it’s definitely bigger and a little bit more fantastic this year,” said Corporal Jennifer Cooper, an RCMP officer and also an organizer of the Torch Run.
“It’s such a wonderful time to be able to actually converse with the athletes and spend time with and meet them. They’re so proud of their sports and their accomplishments and stuff, and it’s wonderful to see this year, especially with the Games being here,” added the Executive Assistant to the Officer in Charge Lisa Alvarez.
Taking place on July 9, the run will see officers and Special Olympics athletes run from the detachment to the CN Centre, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at around noon. Once everyone arrives at the CN Centre, Cooper adds there will be a barbecue by donation to celebrate the upcoming provincial games.
