PRINCE GEORGE – The loss of local heritage is a growing concern for one resident, particularly regarding the swift loss of historic buildings and monuments. They want others to understand that preserving these cultural landmarks is crucial for maintaining a community’s identity.

Within a decade, the downtown area of Prince George has experienced large fires that have destroyed landmark buildings. Currently, the city council is deciding on the future of a National Historic Monument located at the corner of 1st and George Street.

“ I read on Facebook just a few days ago that they had decided they were going to dismantle it and put the rocks back in the river. And I feel like, you know, this is a work of art by a craftsman.”

Concerned citizen

Merritt says that the community has suffered the loss of several historic buildings due to fires.

Chair George Davison of the Prince George Heritage Commission acknowledges the significant losses and outlines the criteria necessary for achieving heritage status.

“There are several themes that encompass, heritage. Community is one of them. Governance is one of them, industry is another one.”

Davison points out that there are various steps residents can take to help safeguard their local heritage.

“Citizens getting involved in the Heritage Commission, in the library, and in the exploration place. Getting involved and being aware.”
