PRINCE GEORGE – Inside a large black tent are some very delightful treats. Mushrooms and lots of them. Their home is called the Prince George Urban Schroomery.

“The name definitely sparks some curiosity,” says Josh Halsband, self-professed mushroom wrangler. “And people come in and, you know, they see the art on the windows and they look through the windows and see things. And then they’re really surprised to see that we’re actually growing the mushrooms and selling them right here.”

And they are part of a long list of locations that are part of Tourism Prince George’s newest addition to the fleet of offerings. Agri-tourism. Opening the doors on a variety of local farms, like the Shroomery.

“Just showcasing amazing farms that have produce, have protein that locals and visitors can buy, as well as shops that support local and are highlighting farmers, local makers and using it in the restaurants, using it in their products,’ explains Carmen Herman, Interim CEO for Tourism Prince George. “And we actually have a lot.”

“I love to show people, give them a tour and show them where the mushrooms are growing and sort of the lab setup and how it all works,” says Halsband. “Like I say, I could talk about mushrooms for hours and that’s just part of it. So when I’ve got some things to show them, it just carries on.”

So if you’re curious about different varieties of mushrooms – and there are many – check in with Shroomery and let Josh bend your ear about the science of growing mushrooms. And prepare to be there for a while.
