Earlier: The BC Wildfire Service says the seven hectare Sam Ross Creek fire, located five kilometres south of Endako Mine, is now classified as under control.

An under control fire is a fire not expected to grown beyond the current perimeter. The fire was discovered on Monday and was caused by lightning.

However the Dorman Lake wildfire is still classified as out-of-control. The fire was discovered on August 1 and has grown to 382.5 hectares in size. The blaze was caused by lightning and the BC Wildfire Service says crews are maintaining 24 hour operations in response. Smoke from the fire is visible to the communities of Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof and can also be seen by motorists travelling along Highway 16 West.

Provincially, the number of wildfires burning is on the decline after more than doubling during hot and dry conditions that were exacerbated by tens of thousands of lightning strikes last weekend.

As of late Thursday morning, there were 107 active blazes in BC – down from 140 over the weekend.

Looking ahead though, the heat is expected to return with Environment Canada forecasting Sunday daytime highs of 26 C in Vancouver, 32 C in Kelowna, 33 C in Nelson and 36 C in Lytton.
