Year-over-year unemployment rate rises to 5.2% in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE — Statistics Canada has released July’s job numbers.

In Prince George, the three month average unemployment rate ending in July was 5.2 per cent, up from 4.4 per cent a year ago.

A total of 49,670 people were working in Prince George in July, down from 54,300 in July 2024.

Wholesale and retail trade along with manufacturing saw the biggest job losses while the natural resources sector saw slight gains in employment.

Provincially, the unemployment rate rose to 5.9 per cent from 5.6 per cent and the national unemployment rate held steady at 6.9 per cent though 41,000 were lost which were mainly full-time jobs concentrated in the private sector.
