BRNO — Carson Carels and his Canadian teammates had to settle for a bronze medal at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

Canada beat Finland 3-0 in Saturday’s (Aug. 16) bronze medal game to win their 30th medal at the invitation-only, best-on-best youth hockey tournament. Canada has won 25 golds, three silvers, and two bronzes at the tournament which has been held since 1991.

Carels, the Prince George Cougars defenceman, finished the 2025 tournament with one assist and two penalty minutes in four games.

Carels is coming off a standout rookie season with the Cougars where he tallied six goals and 35 points in 60 regular season games. He also added a goal and four points in the playoffs as the Cougars fell in seven games to the Portland Winterhawks.

He also helped Canada win gold at the 2025 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship. He also won a silver medal with Team Canada Red at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge
