Forecasted winds to increase Chilcotin-area fire activity, BCWS says

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service is expecting an uptick in fire activity across the Chilcotin this weekend because of forecasted winds.

In a statement, it says sustained winds of 15 km/h with gusts up to 30 km/h are expected from the south-southwest in the western Chilcotin Fire Zone, and south-southeast in the eastern Chilcotin Fire Zone on Saturday (Sept. 13).

Temperatures Saturday are expected to reach 26 C to 28 C with relative humidity between 20 and 25 per cent.

The BC Wildfire Service also notes that winds Sunday could reach 40 km/h from the west-northwest, though temperatures are expected to drop to around 16 C to 19 C, with relative humidity expected to be between 40 and 50 per cent.

“Minimal precipitation is forecasted over the weekend,” the BC Wildfire Service said.

“All Out of Control wildfires in the western parts of the Chilcotin and Quesnel Fire Zones are expected to experience an increase in fire activity and growth on Saturday and Sunday,” the BC Wildfire Service added.

“[The fires will be] fueled by winds, above seasonal temperatures, extended drought conditions and low relative humidity.”

A number of evacuation order and alerts remain in effect in the Cariboo Regional District as crews focus their efforts of large fires like the 135-square kilometre Beef Trail Creek fire, the 222-square kilometre Dusty Lake fire, and the 77-square kilometre Smokey Lake fire.
