PRINCE GEORGE – In the past two weeks, wildlife advocates and community members have successfully rescued over 5,000 fish that were trapped in a water channel at Cottonwood Island Park. This initiative is part of a broader effort to restore the channel and prevent future occurrences of fish getting stranded. Heavy machinery is set to arrive this week to undertake repairs and enhance the habitat for fish.

Since September 22nd, dedicated teams of volunteers have been working diligently to catch and release every fish in a three-kilometre stretch of the channel, returning them to the Nechako River from small pools of water.

The timeline for the channel cleaning was moved up by a few weeks, prompting the group to call on community members for assistance in catching and relocating the trapped fish.

Recently, among the fish caught were several threatened Chinook Salmon, highlighting the importance of this initiative. The restoration plan includes excavating the channel to align its elevation with that of the Nechako River, which will help prevent the formation of isolated pools. The restoration work is expected to wrap up within the next three weeks, and park access will remain uninterrupted during this period.
