Volunteers keep Meals on Wheels rolling as demand for support grows

PRINCE GEORGE – Meals on Wheels remains an essential support system for seniors and individuals with disabilities who depend on the daily delivery of nutritious meals right to their doorsteps. However, behind each warm meal and friendly smile are the dedicated volunteers, truly the backbone of the program.

Steve Seebach, a Meals on Wheels driver, has been delivering meals for the Council of Seniors for over three years. He’s assigned to a specific route and eagerly looks forward to reconnecting with clients who are unable to prepare their own meals.

“Awesome thing to do. My wife and I have done it most days. Some days I do it alone. We have 8 to 12 different homes that we deliver to, in each route. And sometimes, we get two routes in the morning. ”

For Seebach and other drivers, this volunteer role goes beyond merely dropping off food. It’s a heartfelt moment of connection and compassion that truly matters to those on the receiving end.

As the demand for the service increases, so too does the need for extra support.

Malhar Kendurkar, Executive Director of the Prince George Council of Seniors, says that on any given day, there are typically between 6 and 13 routes, each comprising approximately eight stops.

“We provided the highest amount of meals in the entire province.”

The Council of Seniors is continually seeking more drivers, like Seebach, to keep up with the growing demand.

Organizers say even a few hours a week can make a big difference. For many clients, that knock on the door isn’t just lunch, it’s a reminder that someone cares.
