Strike notice could disrupt garbage collection

PRINCE GEORGE — Possible labour pains at the Regional District of Fraser Fort George.

CUPE 1699, which represents employees at the Regional District, served the District with 72 hour strike notice on Wednesday at noon.

The Regional District says bargaining has been challenging though the District is hopeful to find a resolution that it says balances its responsiblity to taxpayers while providing a fair deal to its employees.

CUPE 1699 says both parties reached an impasse in mediation in August 2025 with workers voting overwhelmingly in favour of strike action in August. The Regional District says its request to return to mediation was rejected by CUPE.

The City of Prince George says the strike has the potential to disrupt garbage removal as the Regional District controls all landfill stations within city limits. While the landfill is designated an essential service, the presence of a picket line would deter city employees from crossing it.

As a result, the City has applied to the Labour Relations Board for a common picketing order to explore options that would allow garbage to continue being dropped off at the landfill. A hearing on the matter is currently underway though a decision may not be reached until Monday.
