Canadians await details on affordable housing as Liberals push for support

PRINCE GEORGE – The federal Liberal minority government unveiled Budget 2025 yesterday, outlining significant investments in infrastructure, housing, and defence amid growing global challenges. A local political scientist says passing the budget will be an early test of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s leadership.

Moments after the budget was unveiled in Parliament, Canadians were eager to find out what it meant for them. Prince George City Councillor and UBCM president Cori Ramsay said the plan includes many familiar promises, but she’s waiting to see more details on significant issues like affordable housing.

“So that is one thing that we’re going to be watching closely for further details. The other piece is the federal government is also launching a new housing program, Build Canada Homes, that will aim to build new homes on public lands.”

According to a Political Science Lecturer, Jason Morris, a government’s budget is one of its most important and closely watched actions in politics.

“Mark Carney, the Liberal government appears to be right now, just short of two seats or votes to pass this budget. I have to say that if a government can’t come up with two more votes, they may have some leadership problems. What will probably happen is that the conservatives will vote against the budget for their Partisan reasons.”

On Tuesday, a Conservative MP crossed the floor to join the Liberals, right after Carney presented his fiscal plan, bringing the government one step closer to achieving a majority.

“It should be seen as a little frustrated with the party that loses a member because it sees them as having some internal divisions. At the same time, you have to wonder about the person who crossed the floor, what they were doing in that party to begin with. We tend to see our politics as so acrimonious and divisive, and yet here we have a member who was a dyed-in-the-wool card-carrying conservative suddenly finding themselves agreeing with everything the Liberal Party and its government are doing.”

As debate over the new budget continues, Canadians will be watching closely to see whether these promises translate into real change in their communities.
