RCMP create plan to respond to downtown street disorder

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George RCMP has created interim operating procedures to focus on crime in the city’s downtown core.

Prince George RCMP Supt. Darin Rappel has developed a team of eight downtown zone members whose job it will be “to respond to street disorder, including shoplifting, mischief, arson, disturbances, assaults, overdose assists with Emergency Health Services, and drug-related offences.”

The City says two RCMP members will be on each shift, seven days a week. Overtime shifts will be added when required.

“There will be zero tolerance for fire-related incidents, including mischief and arson. The RCMP will coordinate with City bylaw services and Prince George Fire Rescue where possible.”

The new plan follows a meeting last week in Prince George that included multiple stakeholders, including City senior leadership and members of City Council. Also present were John Brewer, the Assistant Commissioner for the BC RCMP and North District Chief Supt. Ken Floyd.

The City says that it welcomes these operational changes while noting it cannot direct RCMP operations. The City says it will continue to work with other levels of government to pursue broader solutions, including bail reform, stronger criminal justice measures, and additional mental health and supportive housing services.

The City is also working with Victoria to arrange a visit to Prince George by Premier David Eby.
