OTTAWA — Cariboo-Prince George Conservative MP Todd Doherty has taken to social media to express his dismay that another Conservative MP has crossed the floor to join the Liberal government.

The floor crossing follows another one last month and leaves the Liberals just one seat shy of a parliamentary majority.

Markham-Unionville Conservative MP Michael Ma says he made the decision after listening carefully to the people of his riding.

Doherty responded sarcastically on social media by pointing out that Ma had a very busy 24 hours where he collected his Secret Santa gift, waited in line for photos with leader Pierre Poilievre, dined at the party’s Christmas party then crossed the floor.

According to Library of Parliament data, more than 300 members have changed parties while in office since 1867 – 80 of those over the past 25 years.

Often, those switches happened following a change in leadership, or sometimes a complete overhaul of the party itself.
