PRINCE GEORGE –

Northern BC is poised for an economic boost as Artemis Gold announces a $1.44 billion expansion of the Blackwater Mine, which aims to make it one of Canada’s top three gold producers

The Artemis gold mine, located about 120 km south of Vanderhoof, plans to expand its processing capacity to 21 million tonnes per year by 2028, benefiting communities in the region.

“ Everybody’s very much excited about it. The Blackwater Project, by Artemis, has really had a huge impact on the community. And, we’re glad to see that expand.”

Kevin Moutray

Mayor of Vanderhoof

Moutray says that although the mine is located 120 kilometres away, it already benefits numerous local suppliers and contractors. However, housing remains a significant challenge, as rising construction costs hinder new developments.

“It’s a problem in every small community. The cost of building a house right now is just so much higher than what you can buy a house for that it really isn’t an incentive for anybody to take on that risk.”

Charles Scott, a business instructor at UNBC, says Prince George stands to benefit as the regional hub. He expects construction activity to ramp up by mid-2026 and continue for two years, with the workforce growing from 900 to 1,200 employees.

“Companies that they need to successfully operate this mine, many of them are headquartered here. So when activity increases in a mine, even though it’s 130km away, our firms benefit.”

At peak construction, the project will create 1,500 direct jobs, plus additional indirect employment. Scott says northern B.C. is far less tied to forestry than it was in decades past.

Scott adds that managing this growth period wisely can benefit future generations.

The expansion awaits formal confirmation of hydroelectric power supply from BC Hydro, expected early next year.
