PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Spruce Kings scored twice in the first 4:05 en route to a 3-1 win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals at Kopar Memorial Arena Saturday (Dec. 20) night.

The Spruce Kings finally got past the BCHL’s top team in their fourth and final meeting of the season. Cowichan Valley had taken the previous three meetings by a combined 12-7 score, including a 4-3 win on Friday night.

Michael Denney got the party started when he put the puck past Rhett Stoesser at 2:55 of the opening period. Jackson Froysland, who set up the opening goal, doubled PG’s lead a little over a minute later after a Capitals turnover put the puck on his stick inside the attacking zone.

Froysland was named the game’s first star.

The Capitals grew into the game and eventually found a way past Colin Reay when Tristan Gravenor scored shorthanded at 1:03 of the third period. Reay finished with 34 saves on 35 shots and was named the game’s third star.

The Spruce Kings netminder was called to make several key stops in the final frame as the Capitals looked for the tying goal. Like the rest of his teammates, Reay was able to breath a sigh of relief when Tai Ushio scored an empty netter at 18:40 to seal the two-goal win.

Despite the setback, the Capitals remain atop the BCHL standings with a 23-7-1-0 record, which is good for 47 points from 31 games. The 16-11-1-0 Spruce Kings are up to third in the Coastal Conference with 33 points from 28 games.

The Spruce Kings next game is in Spruce Grove, Alberta on Friday, Jan. 2. Their next home game is scheduled for the following Friday (Jan. 9) against the Langley Rivermen.
