PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Spruce Kings hit the ice hard this week as they get ready for what may be their most important doubleheader of the season against Cowichan Valley. The Kings have played inspired hockey as of late winning 5 of their last 6 games and the club knows this is an excellent opportunity to steal 4 points against the top team in the league but it won’t be easy.

“I think a lot of quick puck movement and they’re really good with their stick details in that they’re highly aggressive. They like to kind of play on the offensive side of things so our defensive game has to be there. We could also cause a lot of good turnovers on the transition to get back on offense. So for us, it’s going to be a really good test to finish off the first half of the season.” said Associate Coach Brad Tobin.

The Cowichan Valley Capitals bring the leagues top ranked attack and defense into Kopar and that has translated to a 15 point lead in the Coastal West division. The Kings understand the task that lays ahead and as they themselves trail Coquitlam for top spot in the Coastal East Division by a mere two points finishing the first half of the season on a high note is the goal.

“They play very quick and they’re very detailed. I think for us, it’s about playing fast and using our rink to our advantage. Obviously we love playing here in Kopar and I think that’s got to be an advantage for us. We saw them twice in Cowichan which were both close games but unfortunately didn’t come away with any wins. We want to find a way to get some wins and I think for us, it’s just not getting overconfident. We know that there’s a lot more work to do and obviously playing a team like Cowichan is no small feat. We just have to stick to what we believe in, what we practice every day and just not getting too high on ourselves.” said Spruce Kings forward Marcus Lougheed.

The Spruce Kings host the Capitals at Kopar Memorial Arena at 7pm Friday and 6 pm Saturday.
